“Yo creo que, en principio, la música es un don natural. Las emociones que recibe el artista, el deseo, la voluntad de trabajo..., una lectura, un paseo...; no digamos el amor. Se manifiesta (la inspiration) a veces de modo súbito. Viene cuando quiere, y de donde quiere, esta música mía. Es una gran felicidad recibirla. Y cuando llega, es una fiesta. En los siglos XV y SVI, los compositores se llamaban a sí mismos – y les llamaban - inventores. Y es cierto. Las músicas eran ‘inventos’...La bendición de oir música por dentro. El piano no es suficiente. El compositor oye el timbre de cada instrumento en su cabeza. Es el ‘don’ melódico. Hay que oir. Es como el amor...”

“I believe that, in principle, music is a natural gift. The emotions that an artist receives, the desire, the will to work...a reading, a stroll...to say nothing of love. It takes form (inspiration) at times very suddenly. This music of mine comes to me whenever and from wherever it pleases. It is a great joy to receive it. And when it arrives, it is cause for celebration. In the 15th and 16th centuries, composers called themselves, and were called – inventors. And it is true. Their music was ‘an invention’... The blessing of being able to hear music inside . The piano is not sufficient. The composer hears the timbre of each instrument in his head. This is the melodic ‘gift’. It must be heard. It is like love...”
RODRIGO HABLA DE LA NAVIDAD
“Para mí la Navidad supone ternura, toda ella es suave y entrañable. Los pastores se diría que se hacen ángeles para cantar el nacimiento del Niño divino...La Navidad es la fiesta más familiar y más íntima de todas.”
“La figura de Cristo para mí es esencial. Y en tanto que compositor, me ha inspirado de modo peculiar Jesúa-Niño, así como la Virgen María. Es decir, el tema del Nacimiento. Por ello he compuesto muchos villancicos, los cuales dentro de mi producción, acaso sean lo más puro, sencillo y directo que he escrito.”
“Para mí el villancico es el reflejo del alma sencilla de las gentes, que se expresa en los cánticos de Navidad. Canta el pueblo, sin otra aspiración que la de manifestar su alegría ante el belén. Pastorcito santo es el que más me gusta. Porque es sobrio, limpio, sencillo...el villancico español tiene una personalidad propia”.
RODRIGO ON CHRISTMAS
Christmas, for me, is all tenderness, warmth and intimacy. The shepherds would seem to become angels singing of the Holy Child’s birth. Christmas is more deeply a family holiday than any other.
“For me, the figure of Christ is essential. And as a composer, the Baby Jesus has been particularly inspiring, as well as the Virgin Mary; in a word, the Christmas theme. For that reason, I have composed so many carols, which are perhaps the most pure, the simplest and most direct of all the works I have written.”
“I believe that Christmas carols reflect the soul of the people expressed in canticles and songs of the season. They are the unadorned voice of the people, who merely wish to express their joy at the Nativity scene. Holy Shepherd Boy is my favorite, for its restraint and untarnished simplicity. The Spanish Christmas carol posseses its own personality.
