From the Victoria and Joaquín Rodrigo Foundation, and in anticipation to the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the death of the composer Joaquín Rodrigo, we are pleased to present a ¨virtual exhibit¨ where through our social networks we will share with you some extraordinary and interesting objects related to his life.
Some objects, like the one we present to you today, are tributes that reflect the affection and admiration the Maestro received throughout his life. Others are personal items that belonged to the couple, Joaquín and Victoria, possessing special interest for being objects that accompanied them in their life's journey.
This first exhibit is a commemorative medal designed and made by Victor Huster (a participant in the designing of the Euro) for Joaquín Rodrigo's 95th anniversary. It was commissioned as a tribute to the Maestro by one of his most important publishers, Schott.
Accompanying this image is the text where the artist explains the ideas he used when conceiving its design, which although not entirely exempt of some of our country's clichés, does fully reflect and transmit his understanding of the sensitivity and beauty of Joaquín Rodrigo's music.
We hope that you enjoy our small virtual museum!
"As light as leaves blown by the wind, harmoniousness which endures earthly frailty –this is how Joaquín Rodrigo would like his music to be understood. With the "Concierto de Aranjuez" he draws a realistic and mystical picture of Spanish spiritual life. This medal, dedicated to his birthday as well as to his best-known work, attempts by means of a comprehensively eloquent miniature sculture to do justice to the particular aspects of his methos of creativity, his romanticism and his precision as well as his choice of themes. The use of metal in this piece of craftsmanship, minted by means of extravagant and complicated techniques, was also chosen with the intention of corresponding to this buoyancy: in accordance with the idea of retaining the freshness and lightness of the material, it has been consistently worked into a living object in which the observer has the impression - in style and form - that he is holding a piece of Spain in his hands.
The “creation side” (obverse) of the medal expresses the idea of striving upwards from the lonely Spanish landscape, glowing and parched from the sun, and reaching by way of a mighty vaulted Moorish arch the convex “life side” (reverse).
The bases of the arch are shaped in the form of the instrument which defines Rodrigo’s work, the guitar, which also forms his coat-of arms as Marqués de los Jardines de Aranjuez by means of a wavy line and as an escutcheon depicted on the reverse.
The blind composer’s favourite noise is the sound of the waves of the sea. It was this and also the maritime character of the country which inspired the artits to create this medal in the form of as shell: in a broader sense the inner side of the shell (the obverse) depicts the image of the composer’s private, intimate mood when he is composing, whereas the outside presents aspects os Spanish life which are visible and familiar to all. Both sides stand under the influence of a dominating sun.
Obverse:
J. Rodrigo is sitting at the piano working on that plaintive cor anglais melody from the beginning of the second movement of the "Concierto de Aranjuez", the melody to which above all the work owes its popularity. The first bars of this passage are written in Braille on the vertically situated strip of waves, and, logically, appear in corresponding musical notation in the equivalent place on the reverse. The seated figure of Rodrigo and the instruments lying around are deliberately treated in incised relief: he does not see, he feels with his fingers. In order to represent the complex process of composition, the strings of the guitar open up and indicate in a direct line the combination with the accompanying orchestral instruments in this concerto, the groups of string, brass and wind instruments, depicted in miniature.
Reverse:
Illuminated by the disc of the sun bearing his autograph, the contents of the three movements of the "Concierto de Aranjuez" can be read from left to right: the setting of folk music depicted by the figure of a female dancer seen from behind, a masked figure carrying a cross and conveying the sad mood of a Saeta, and for the third movement the wroughtiron gate, standing ajar, leading to the enchanted park of the Palace of Aranjuez, the place of peace and calmness for Rodrigo, to which only he has the right key.
The technical conception of the medal intends to refer directly to the character of the country, to Rodrigo’s predilections and to the impression his music made to me: antique minting technique, medal in the form of a shell, seemingly light and yet weighing 103 grams.
The motif section, up to 67 milimetres in size, displays a generous, expansive design which makes this medal an unusual object".
